For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.  In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

Ephesians 1:4-6 (NIV)

God chose you. Think about that Biblical truth. You and I have been chosen by God. The decision to do this was made long ago. It was planned. This intentional sovereign act was to allow us to be pleasing to God. He wants us to be holy and blameless in His eyes.

You and I are truly blessed. We are first string. We are number one. Personally, I have no clue how that really feels in the world of sports. I come from a family of eight children.  I have four brothers. When the high school coach heard there was another Perkins on the way, he was happy. Some of my brothers were very good at sports. But I remember his asking me after seeing me play: “Are you sure you are a Perkins?” You see, I scored a total of two points in my high school basketball career. On the playground when teams were chosen, I often I found myself in that dreaded position of being the last one picked. You can understand why I find myself very excited about being chosen by God.

God’s love caused Him to choose us, to predestine our adoption process. While we may not be able to fully understand “divine election” in the 600 words or less granted to this column, we can understand that we have been chosen by God. God has been working forever on making us a part of His family. This adoption process started before creation. He adopted us through Jesus Christ because He wanted to; it brought Him great joy. It is His pleasure to serve us. So think about that for the next 600 seconds – God intentionally, at very high cost, has made it possible for you and me to be His sons and daughters. We are now in the family of God. His children.

Your childhood memories may be similar to mine, or you might have been a sports star. It really does not matter. What does matter is that you have been chosen by God. You can know what it is like to be first string with God, to be His number one pick. You are blessed.

Stay focused.
